The Design of Low-cost Inverted Pendulum Apparatus

We have designed a low-cost inverted pendulum apparatus for pedagogical use using a 3D printer and readily available inexpensive materials. Currently, commercially available inverted pendula systems designed for instruction in control theory are quite expensive, making it a difficult system to use for direct student experimentation. By designing a system that is primarily printed-out on a low-cost 3D printer, we hope to make such systems available for widespread instructional use. We will describe our open-source design and the iterative process by which it has been refined.
